Artist Statement

I am a fine artist, dedicated to painting my impressions of the world around me. I painted everything but landscape until I joined South Dakota Plein Air Artists Group. We meet at different locations around the state, and paint the scenes on location. The experience has an impact on my work allowing me to capture light and mood as it really is from life with greater spontaneity. With a limited time to work, it helps me to find the essence of the scene. I use my on-site work to paint larger scale studio works. I want to communicate the wonder that I see in the spacious skies and the wide open plains, sometimes familiar places that usually don’t get a second glance and beyond to spectacular vistas.

This winter I am painting setups of familiar objects, seen in a new light. They have their own stories to tell. This is one way to continue painting from life through the cold months of the year. Once a week I paint the nude figure from life, mainly as an exercise to improve my skills.
